Prolific and versatile American composer Philip Glass is considered one of the most important and influential forces in modern music. He broke the conventions of Western art music back in the 1960s and 70s with his Eastern-inspired approach. And ever since he's broken barriers between art forms, collaborating with pop stars, choreographers and poets, and scoring films.

This year he's reviving his first-ever opera, the groundbreaking Einstein on the Beach, for the first time in 20 years. He talks to Jian about the relevance of Einstein today, why he eschews narrative structure in his work, and how his music is akin to slices of bread.
