An Interfaith World Peace Sacred Sand Mandala
At Christ Church Cathedral in Louisville
August 11-14

Sponsored by Interfaith Paths to Peace, St. William Church and the Drepung Gomang Institute
Monday through Friday, August 11-15, 2014

(Louisville, KY) The Drepung Gomang Institute (DGI), Louisville’s Tibetan Buddhist dharma center, Interfaith Paths to Peace and St. William Catholic Church announce the creation of an Interfaith World Peace Sand Mandala.

This unusual sand mandala will be offered as a visual “Prayer for Peace” for the people and leaders of Gaza and Israel, Syria, Ukraine, Iraq, and Tibet. Creation of the Sand mandala will begin Monday, August 11 at Noon and will continue until midday on Friday, August 15 in Bishops Hall of Christ Church Cathedral, 425 South Second Street, Louisville, KY 40202.

Six Tibetan Buddhist monks of the Drepung Gomang Sacred Arts Tour from India will spend part of five days meticulously and prayerfully creating a sand mandala from colored grains of sand. The image includes many interfaith symbols of peace.

On the final day they will perform a dissolution ceremony in which they sweep up the image and prayers, walk to the river and release them to benefit all.

All are invited to stop by to offer personal, silent prayers for peace.

The Opening Ceremony at Noon on Monday will include statements about Interfaith peacemaking by Terry Taylor, Executive Director of Interfaith Paths to Peace, and other interfaith leaders.

As the creation of the Sand Mandala progresses, the monks will also be selling unique and beautiful Tibetan crafts, prayer beads, jewelry, clothes, bags and religious items. All funds raised help provide food, housing, healthcare and education for the 2000 monks, many of whom are refugees, at the Drepung Gomang Monastery in India. Donations to support the monks are also welcome.
